Family hotels in Portugal

925 properties with family rooms, kids' facilities or both across 10 destinations in Portugal, from € 40 per night for two adults.

Of these, 764 can sleep three people in one room, 498 can sleep four and 173 can sleep five. Four in one room starts at € 29 a night, about 26% more than two people pay here.

Two adults with two children finds 578 properties — more than four adults can book, because a room with a sofa bed often takes children but not extra adults. Enter the children's ages and you see them.

Family hotels in Portugal at a glance

We track 925 properties with family rooms, kids' facilities or both across 10 destinations in Portugal. Lisbon has the most with 218; Lagos has the lowest starting price at € 40 a night. Typical prices across the country run from € 81 to € 124 depending on where you go, which is a wider gap than most travellers expect within one country. Staying in Faro costs about 1.5 times what Porto does for the same kind of property, so if your plans are flexible the destination matters more than the hotel.

What to look for in family hotels in Portugal

Properties here report family rooms, children's facilities, or both. In practice that means rooms that sleep three or more without a folding bed jammed between the wardrobe and the door, and often a pool, a play area or a kids' club. The gap between a hotel that tolerates children and one that is built around them is wide, and the amenity list does not show it.

Before you book, check

  • The actual bed configuration. "Family room" can mean a double plus a sofa bed, which is not the same as two proper beds.
  • Whether cots and extra beds are free, and up to what age. Charges per night add up quickly.
  • The child policy for meals: some properties feed under-sixes free, others charge adult rates from age six.
  • Whether the pool has a shallow section and whether it is supervised.
The thing people get caught by

Maximum occupancy is enforced. A room listed for three will not take a fourth person even if the fourth is a toddler, and properties do turn families away at reception. Book for the number of people who will actually sleep there, including infants.

Worth it for: Anyone travelling with children who would rather not spend the trip negotiating space.
